Walter Johnson HSGreetings WJ Community,
In case you have not heard, WJ S*T*A*G*E's fabulous fall
production of *King Lear* is opening Friday, November 13th!
The performances are November 13, 14, 20, and 21 at 7:30 PM and there is a special matinee
performance on Sunday, November 15th at 1:00 PM which is followed by a question and
answer session with the cast and crew. All of the cast and crew has worked
incredibly hard on this show, and it is truly wonderful to watch. I
also personally recommend that WJ students come see the show because every
senior reads the play in English class, and seeing the production onstage is a
huge advantage as well as very entertaining. Tickets and more information
can be found at wjstage.com. See you there!

Holding School on Tilden LaneIt was brought to my attention by a Luxmanor neighbor that the tennis courts at the Tilden Holding School Center facility at Tilden and Marcliff are now gone. The fence and net posts have been removed and MCPS is placing portables on pretty much the entire remaining 4 tennis court area.
Here's what I know from some phone calls I made today. I started by calling Cabin John and extending a welcome to our neighborhood. They seem very pleasant and eager to be part of the community. As you may know, Key Middle School which is currently in the building will be moving out in the next week or two and Cabin John Middle School will be moving in. Cabin John will be torn down and rebuilt, so the Cabin John school will be at the Tilden Holding Center for two years. Cabin John's projected enrollment for this coming fall is 908. Key Middle School was about 770. I'm told the only change to the outside of the building will be a total of 9 portables that will sit on the old tennis court area. This may initially look like more because some of the trailers get pieced together. The adjacent basketball courts will remain. The whole building will get checked and maintained as other MCPS schools. I was told they will add some mechanical and electrical upgrades.
I then followed up with Transportation regarding bussing of 908 students. I was told they expect 10 buses heading east on Tuckerman in the morning and turning left on Marcliff. Six other busses will come via Montrose and Tilden. Each bus has a capacity of 55 students, so I imagine they may fine tune this plan with an extra bus somewhere. I mentioned the no left turn on Marcliff after 4:00 of which they were already aware. After school activity busses would come via Montrose and Tilden.
Please let me know if you observe other interesting developments at Tilden Center or have other questions.

Tilden MSIt is that time of year again and we are busy planning our Annual Career Day for the 8th graders at Tilden Middle School.
As in the past we seek from our community those people that are interested in sharing their careers with the 8th graders. Many of you have participated in the past . The date this year is Friday April 17th from 7:45 until noon. Each speaker is assigned to a class period (total of 4). There are 2 sessions for each class period and 2 speakers will be paired together , sharing a 45 minute slot, hence plan to speak for about 20 minutes., then questions at end.
If you are interested and would like to participate this year could you respond by email to me; Pam Marquez (parent) , Chairperson Tilden Middle School Career Day. I will need the following:
Name
Email address to be used
Contact phone number
Profession
Equipment needed if any for presentation.
Additionally, I will then send more specific details about the day.

Tilden MSDear Tilden Community,
If you would like to donate funds to the Tilden Families in Need
account please send checks made out to Tilden Middle School to Mei
Chung, our financial assistant. In the memo section of the check write,
'Tilden Families in Need'. We use the money for various things through
out the year to help families out that may need assistance paying for
field trips or other activities at the school. Additionally, during the
holidays, we work with families to purchase gifts for their children.
This is done anonymously and privately by a couple of our wonderful
staff members working closely with the parents or guardians. Many
students at the school benefit from this fund. Your generosity is much
appreciated.

Tilden MSTilden Middle School Calendar
Dear Tilden Community,
There was an article in the Washington Post last week about Maryland schools that did not meet their annual yearly progress goals (AYP) for reading and math as outlined by the state of Maryland. Tilden Middle School was on the list in the article as a school that did not meet AYP. I wanted to send out this note to clarify a couple of critical points. First, Tilden did meet their goals for the 2006-2007 school year. They were on the list in the article because schools need to meet AYP for two consecutive years to be removed from the list. In the school years 2004-2005 and 2005-2006, Tilden middle School did not make AYP. It is our goal to meet AYP in the 2007-2008 school year. This will remove our school from the state list. I have every confidence that we will be able to meet the state requirements this year. We made some incredible gains last year and the momentum created by our success is still very much alive at Tilden!
I hope that this clarifies some points that may have caused confusion when you read the article. If you are interested in this topic, and would like more data, the please visit the following website:
www.mdk12.org
I suggest that you look at the information located under the “Data” tab regarding the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) and AYP. I will also be showing parents school data on Back-to-School Night and at other functions throughout the year. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Thank You,
Jennifer

[Walter Johnson] Hall of Fame Nominations - Deadline April 20!Each year since 1992, the Walter Johnson PTSA has honored two WJ Staff members who have made exceptional contributions to our students' education and personal development.
One faculty member each year is honored for teaching excellence, and one staff member (not necessarily a teacher) is honored for outstanding involvement in support of students.
The awards are presented at the annual awards ceremony, which will be held this year on Monday, May 21st.
Whom do you think should receive your special recognition this year?
---- Which teacher has taken extra time to explain a difficult concept to your student?
---- Who has excited your student about a new interest or subject?
---- Which staff member has helped your student get involved in a new extracurricular
activity, or expanded your student's horizons or given him/her leadership experience?
---- Or who has provided a big boost to your student's self-confidence?
If a WJ teacher or staff member comes to mind as you read these questions, please submit a nomination by completing the online form on the WJ Homepage or in the next issue of the Big Train. If your family has already nominated staff members for these annual PTSA awards - thank you!!
The winners will be announced at the Academic Awards Night on May 21st. -

Walter JohnsonPing Pong Table Needed for WJ Club
Hello WJ community.
My name is Mike Laukaitis and I teach in the math department here at WJ.
For years I have ran a ping-pong club during lunch. Throughout the
years and various location changes, my table has been pretty much
destroyed. We are able to use it a bit, but it's in really bad shape.
Before I go out and try to raise money (or put up my own) I wanted to
ask if anyone had a table they weren't using anymore. Any old nets and
paddles are also welcome. Thanks for any help in this matter, we had our
first club meeting today and 13 kids showed up. It's a great start!!
Thanks again

Along with a number of WJ staff, I will be running in this event. I

opportunity for the WJ community to come together on a Saturday morning,
get some exercise, have fun and raise money for our school.
The Kensington 8K has been a successful run in past years and we are
fortunate to have been identified as one of the three beneficiaries of
this fundraiser. Please register and show your support for this event
