  • Paving on Hoya Street- traffic delays
    Posted on: 2010-07-14
The State Highway Administration (SHA) will be working overnight on Hoya Street (previously Old Old Georgetown Road) beginning the week of July 25.

Residents can expect SHA crews to be out along the Hoya Street ramp between southbound MD 355 and Montrose Road, as well as the small section of Montrose Road in front of The Monterey Apartments, overnight Sunday through Thursday between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., weather permitting. The work should last about two weeks.

The scope of work includes grinding the existing pavement and repaving the roadway, as well as installing pavement markings.

The project is nearly complete, and SHA appreciates your continued patience.

  • May 13- Help Develop Traffic Solutions for Our Community
    Posted on: 2010-05-04
Now that the updated White Flint Sector Plan has been adopted by the County Council, a number of residents, including me, from the communities surrounding the White Flint sector have requested that the development community work with the residential communities to address neighborhood mobility balance (including cut-through traffic protection) that may result from the new development to be constructed within the White Flint area.

As a result, the Friends of White Flint, the non-profit organization organized to promote the redevelopment of White Flint and composed of residents, businesses and developers, has invited Glatting-Jackson, a nationally-known transportation consulting firm that helped design the planned street-grid network for the new White Flint, to work with the surrounding communities on traffic and mobility issues. Ian Lockwood and his team from Glatting-Jackson will be in town on May 13th and 14th to hear from the surrounding communities, walk the area and talk about best practices that have been considered and adopted by communities both nationally and internationally.

Each community is being given an hour with Ian and his team to talk about specific issues and concerns and to put together workable solutions to provide traffic relief as well as alternatives to community travel to and from the center of White Flint (the Metro Station), such as neighborhood shuttles and dedicated bike lanes. I have reserved for Old Farm/Walnut Woods/Tilden Woods Thursday evening May 13th from 6-7 pm at Federal Realty Investment Trust, 1626 East Jefferson Street (right behind Congressional Plaza). There is plenty of free parking for those driving.. In addition, there will be a community-wide meeting the evening of May 13th from 7-10, at which Glatting-Jackson will make a presentation on best practices and how they would apply to the surrounding communities.

The idea is to create a list of solutions that will work for residents, businesses and the development community that can be presented to the County government for implementation.

Please plan on attending these meetings. This is your opportunity to interact with one of the pre-eminent transportation planners in the country and the development community to learn more about what is planned for White Flint and make sure your voice is heard on traffic/transportation issues in a collaborative setting. I would be happy to talk with you prior to the meetings if you have any questions or need additional information. Additionally, if you have photos, maps, or other documents that Glatting-Jackson should consider, it would be helpful if you could provide them to me as soon as possible, so that I can ensure that Ian and the team have an opportunity to look at them prior to the meetings. Also, if there are others that should know about these meetings, please forward this information to those who would be interested,

For more information on the White Flint Plan, see whiteflintplanning.org or friendsofwhiteflint.org. Looking forward to a good turnout on the 13th.

CABIN JOHN DOG PARK OPENED WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23! “HOWL-O-WEEN” GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31
BETHESDA, MD—The brand new dog park at Cabin John Regional Park, 10900 Westlake Drive in Bethesda, opens tomorrow. The new dog park includes two areas—one for large dogs and a separate area for small dogs.
“We are very pleased to announce the opening of the new Cabin John Dog Park,” said Director of Parks Mary Bradford. “The surrounding community has been anxiously awaiting this new park amenity—it should be poodles of fun for our canine companions!”
The Cabin John Dog Park is now the fourth official dog park in the Montgomery Parks system. “At the Cabin John Dog Park, we have also included rock climbing structures for dog exercise and play,” said Department of Parks Project Manager CJ Lilly. “As part of this project, we’ve also added a plaza area, with a park pavilion, trash containers, drinking fountains and benches in shaded areas for dogs and their owners.”
The new Cabin John Dog Park is the first in the Montgomery County parks system with separate areas for large and small dogs. The large dog park area is about 40,000 square feet in size; the small dog area is 10,000 square feet. The total size of the new Cabin John Dog Park is 50,000 square feet, just over one acre. The dog park is completely fenced and currently FREE to use and open during regular park hours, sunrise to sunset. However, the dog park will be closed from 9:00 am through 11:00 am every Tuesday for weekly park maintenance.
The Department of Parks is planning a grand opening celebration for the new dog park at Cabin John Regional Park on Saturday, October 31—“Howl-O-Ween.” The FREE event will include games, information and plenty of human and dog treats.

  • NEW - Online Streamlined Police Report Filing
    Posted on: 2009-09-23
The Montgomery County Police Department is continuing to take advantage of newly developed technology in an effort to help streamline the public’s ability to receive information and assist in furthering crime-fighting efforts.

On Monday, September 21, the department implemented a new system called CopLogic which is an online citizen reporting service that will make filing certain police reports easier and faster. The new program can only be used to report these types of specific incidents that occurred in Montgomery County: thefts under $10,000, vandalism, identity theft, and lost property. It can also be used to provide tips to solve crimes.

If you have a son or daughter entering Kindergarten in the fall and would be interested in playing soccer this fall please read on.... I am looking for at least 2 more participants to complete our group.

I am one of the coordinators for Darryl Gee Soccer Academy. I started a soccer team in the spring of 2007 with the children from her pre-school. This will be my 6th season being the coordinator. Unfortunately not all the team members are able to continue with us this fall because of the different Elementary schools they will be attending. So I am in search of Luxmanor or Farmland Elementary Kindergartners who would like to join us.

We meet on Fridays at Tilden Woods Park from 4:00-4:55. The total cost is $145. That cost covers: 8 sessions of soccer for $115 (also included a Darryl Gee T-shirt) payable to Darryl Gee Soccer Academy,Inc. The other $30 is for their official adidas team shirt ($20), individual trophy($7.50) and a contribution ($2.50) towards the coaches gift at the end of the fall season. If you continue in the spring the cost will be reduced to $125.

The fall session is from Friday, September 25 - Friday, November 13. If we get rained out we extend one week to Nov. 20.

Please contact Lori Scherr at ori4lori@aol.com or call me directly on my cell at 301-802-1954.

It's fun, instructional, and the kids get to see each other and make new friends outside the school environment.

  • Call to Action- I-270 widening proposal
    Posted on: 2009-07-16
    7/16/09
Despite all of the financial issues in our economy, and the clear recognition that dependence on foreign oil is a national security risk, burning fossil fuels pollutes our environment, and sprawl development degrades our standard of living, the proposal to widen I-270 is alive and being debated. Next Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council will vote whether or not to support a $4 Billion widening project. Go to http://citizen-networks.org/campaign/270widening to sign a petition to oppose further degrading Montgomery County and spending billions of dollars that are needed to promote transit opportunities and walkable/bikable communities. For some unimaginable reason, and despite all evidence to the contrary, some people have not realized that building roadways promotes the use of transportation options (single-occupancy vehicles, specifically) that are contrary to our welfare and communities. It has been demonstrated time and again, in city after city, that road construction leads to greater use of SOVs, which results in clogging the new roadway. Congestion cannot be cured through pavement. It has also been shown that, for the square footage of land used, a lane of vehicular traffic transports the fewest individuals. Therefore, road construction and widening is wasteful of precious dollars, precious land, and the health of our citizens who live nearby. Please sign the petition and let the council know that this is an issue that needs to be solved through other transportation options.

This would be great for a mom who needs a little time to run errands or perhaps someone who works at home. We are looking for a local family (preferably Bethesda, Rockville, or Kensington) who might like some help Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings between 8:30-12 or some combination of days. We need our nanny to be able to pick up our daughter at 12:15 in Rockville. We are hoping the family can commit through the school year, but at least through December. We can be flexible and have our nanny available to the family all day on Friday or sometimes all day on Wednesdays if the family needs the nanny for more hours.
  • Bioretention Facility for Tilden Woods Park
    Posted on: 2009-06-16
The Parks Department is holding a public meeting to present their plans for construction of a Bioretention Facility for Tilden Woods Local Park. The facility is to mitigate, or make amends for, impacts to the environment (I am assuming) when they constructed the Montrose Parkway.

    DATE: THURSDAY JULY 9, 2009
    TIME: 7-9PM
PLACE: TILDEN WOODS LOCAL PARK, 6800 TILDEN LANE, POTOMAC, MD 20852

(my note: yes! now we live in Potomac, according to the county. I won't comment, you might want to. I do question how well the County Park and Planning Dep't. and Dept. of Transportaton (DOT) really know our neighborhood to make a mistake like this).

This is from the postcard I received:

The Montg. Co. Dept. of Transportation has proposed the construction of a bioretention facility (rain garden) in Tilden Woods Local Park as part of the mitigation package for the Montrose Parkway. Plans for the bioretention facility will be presented and public input will be solicited. The meeting will include an opportunity to visit the proposed construction site.

Please email Doug.Redmond@montgomeryparks.org or call 301-650-4867 to join the email list, or if you have questions.

Long-time Luxmanor resident Thomas Bevans has just opened a Tango dance studio and club just off Nicholson Lane at 5050D Nicholson, near Repeat Performance (www.thedancingclub.com). We have been taking ballroom lessons for years from Thomas, including Tango. He is a wonderful teacher and Tango is a wonderful dance - few rules and great fun. It is easy for beginners to learn.

He will be offering both lessons and 'Milonga' sessions, which are times to just dance the Tango, most nights of the week.

The Garlic Mustard Challenge is a county-wide competition sponsored by the Montgomery County Department of Parks to help save the forest and weed out garlic mustard—one of the aliens invading your parks!

Garlic mustard, a non-native, invasive plant is out competing native plants and trees in parks. This weed, is easy to identify and easy to pull. We’ll teach you how. Gather up your family, friends, club members and neighbors!

We’ll provide the bags, you’ll fill them with garlic mustard and turn them back in to one of our weigh stations on the Challenge Days. Last year we pulled over 11,000 pounds of the stuff out of 25 parks.

    February 12, 2009

Today 127 houses in 20852 lost power. This occurs often when there is wind.

Old Stage Road and the homes between it and Montrose are among those effected.

Please contact Pepco online at www.pepco.com > Contact us > Contact Us Online.

With so few houses affected during an emergency, we do not rate the concern that other larger outages may receive. After the emergency, there seems to be no connection being made that this is a repeat problem. Many of us work from home and last year one of our neighbors was on home dialysis.

Perhaps a group voice would bring attention to our problem and by solving our repeat problem help others during other emergency situations.

During an outage, you can call Pepco at 202-833-7500. Cordless phones will not work, but any corded landline (or cell phone) will get through. Let's make waves!

    Thank you.

  • St. Elizabeth Bell Tower Goes to Board of Appeals Hearing
    Posted on: 2008-12-12
I am writing on behalf of a Tilden Woods neighbor and the Chadsberry community (Tildenwood Drive, north of Montrose Road) regarding a serious problem they are having with the construction of the new bell tower at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church on Montrose Road.

The church received a height variance from the City of Rockville and constructed the bell tower at the end of 2007. The variance required the church to notify all neighbors within 1/2 mile of the design, etc. for the planned tower. Apparently, the church failed to inform the neighbors that the tower would include lights inside the tower (shining outward, as opposed to the normal lighting method of floodlighting from the ground below) and that the bells would be programmed to ring every 15 minutes till 9pm seven days a week.

As a result, the sound from the tower has been a nuisance to a family, the Winstons, on Tildenwood Lane (it is a cul-de-sac with very few houses; this house directly faces the bell tower on the south side of Montrose Road) and to five of the homes in Chadsberry. Additionally, the light shining out of the tower brightly illuminates the bedroom level of the Winston's home (and is on all night long). In response to multiple complaints, the frequency of the ringing was reduced to every 1/2 hour and a filter was installed on the light, but the church representatives (in particular, Father MacFarlane) was unwilling to meet with those adversely affected in order to determine a mutually satisfactory solution. Montgomery County conducted sound level tests and determined that, although the bells are loud and intrusive, they do not exceed the county noise code. It should be noted that Faith United Methodist Church, across the street from St. E's, also has a bell tower, but rings it to announce church services and for special occasions only, out of consideration for the neighbors.

Father MacFarlane has refused to make any further adjustments or to consider recommendations from the Winstons or the Chadsberry homeowners association. Therefore, there will be hearing at 9:30am on Saturday, January 10, 2009, at Rockville City Hall before the Board of Appeals. The board will be reviewing the failure of the church to provide adequate notice of the bell tower's design and function in its request for a variance.

If you are so inclined to come to the hearing in support of the neighbors, they would be very grateful. It is open to the public. If you prefer to send a letter or email to the Board of Appeals, the contact information is as follows:
email regarding the case should be sent to: cpds@rockvillemd.gov referencing the St. Elizabeth/bell tower/bells and lights

Commissioners are Roy Deitchman, chair, Christopher Maravilla and Alan Sternstein. The staff liaisons are Castor Chasten and Margaret Hall.

  • Tilden Woods Park Remodel
    Posted on: 2008-10-11
The playground equipment at Tilden Woods Park is being completely redone due to vandalism that took place several years ago. This is good news!! I provided some input to the design to the two sets (one for kids under age 5 and one for ages 5-12) but since I don't know what other people want to be included, I suggest you e-mail the architect, Kathy.Dearstine@montgomeryparks.org regarding the design. The equipment will be installed winter/early spring. The budget is a large sum of money so we should get the works, rock climbing walls and enclosed tunnels!! The tire swing is being removed to do the two playground sets. Thank you.
  • Home Invasion & Safety Update
    Posted on: 2008-10-09
    October 7, 2008

    Dear Community Member:

I’d like to update you on last evening’s public meeting at Walt Whitman High School regarding the home invasion robberies.

County Executive Isiah Leggett opened the meeting with brief remarks and introduced Councilmember Roger Berliner who also spoke. Chief Tom Manger led the Police presentation and indicated his Department’s commitment to keep the public informed and safe. Police continue to seek the public’s help in identifying the suspect believed responsible for six incidents.

    New Information

Captain Patty Walker provided additional information about the series of home invasions and a homicide that have targeted older residents. At this time only the homicide and two of the home invasion robberies have been officially linked, but detectives believe the same individual may have committed all six crimes.

    Home Invasion Robberies:

    September 17, 2007, 11:40 p.m.
7600 block of Maryknoll Avenue, Bethesda
    92-year-old female victim

    November 27, 2007, 1:03 a.m.
5500 block of Montgomery Street, Chevy Chase
    77-year-old female victim
    January 9, 2008, 12:01 a.m.
    2300 block of 49th Street. N.W., Washington, D.C.
84-year-old male and 85-year-old female victims
    February 27, 2008, 8:15 a.m.
11000 block of Picasso Lane, Potomac
    78-year-old female victim
    Vehicle taken
    May 7, 2008, 2:30 a.m.
(Reported at this time, occurred earlier)
5800 block of Brookside Drive, Bethesda
75-year-old male and 70-year-old female victims
    Homicide:
    Found September 4, 2008, 8:43 a.m.
(Likely occurred overnight from 9/2 into 9/3)
8900 block of Seven Locks Road, Potomac
    63-year-old victim
    Vehicle taken
Detectives used DNA evidence to officially link the homicide to two of the home invasions that occurred in Montgomery County. The specific incidents that were linked are not being released due to the on-going investigation and for the safety of all of the surviving victims.

    Similarities between the incidents:

Victims in all incidents are between 63 and 92 years old
    All the victims were tied
All of the homes had secluded back yards
None of the homes had a residential alarm system
Suspect described similarly by all surviving victims as: a white or Latino male who spoke with a slight Hispanic accent, but spoke English very well, in his 20’s, 5’5” to 5’8” tall, with a medium build. He wore a mask in all but one incident. A wide variety of clothing was worn to include camouflage and once described as “dressed to fit in with the community”.

    Differences:

4 victims were older women living alone, 2 incident victims were older couples (man and wife)
Methods of entry: in some cases doors were unlocked, in some the rear basement door was pried open, and in some a pane of glass from a rear door was removed
Phone lines to entire house cut once, lights disabled at circuit breakers inside house twice
Variety of items taken from homes
In one case tools were found at the scene that the suspect may have brought with him in a dark duffel bag

The length of time between incidents has varied from 43 to 119 days.

A series of unusual items were left at the Picasso Lane incident to include a purple backpack containing such property as: two baseball hats, one with a Nike logo and one with a Lowe’s logo; marbles; a Smoot Lumber strap; a slingshot made out of a bundle of large rubber bands held together by a piece of denim cloth. It was later learned that the backpack had been stolen five years ago from the 3700 block of Harrison Street in northwest Washington, D.C.

The suspect asks for a variety of items to include cash and gold. He takes his time and looks wherever he wants throughout a home. Some unique items have been taken during the home invasions. One piece of jewelry is described as an “Old European cut” diamond ring with dark blue enamel on either side of the 18-karat yellow gold setting and another is a voice-activated watch for the visually impaired manufactured by “LS&S”.

On September 24 there was an attempted residential burglary in the 4900 block of Asbury Lane in Bethesda. The 70-year-old victim who lives alone had a residential alarm system that activated during the evening. She did not learn until the following day that the basement door locks were damaged and then called police. It is not known if this incident is related to the series, but serves as a reminder that all residents should not hesitate to call police for suspicious activity or suspicious person in a neighborhood.

Calls should be made to 911 if a situation is in progress and to the Montgomery County Police non-emergency number at 301-279-8000 if the suspicious incident is not in progress.

    Safety Tips

Commander Russell Hamill of the Police Department’s 2nd District (Bethesda) reminded the audience of the following strategies to help prevent crime in their neighborhoods.

Ensure that there are functioning locks for all doors and windows and use them consistently. Garage doors should also be kept secured when not in use.
Security systems that include alarms, exterior lighting with motion detectors, and timers for interior lighting are all measures that may prevent residential crime.
Shrubbery close to the home that might provide concealment should be trimmed.
Newspapers and mail should be taken in the day it is delivered. If residents are unable to pick it up, they should have a neighbor or family member collect it for them.
If residents believe they are being followed they should not go home but drive to a public place. If they can safely obtain information that would be helpful to the police such as a description or tag number; they should do so as long as they don’t endanger themselves.
If you suspect an intruder, don’t confront the person. If you can’t leave the house safely, lock yourself in a room with a phone or cell phone.
Don’t enter your home if you see signs of forced entry. Go to a safe place to call police.
Know your neighbors and your community – senior men or women living alone should develop regular daily contact with a friend, family member, or neighbor who will alert police if that regular contact is not made.
Residents should call the police if they believe something doesn’t fit, occurs at an unusual time of day, or seems uncharacteristic to the area.

    Reward Fund

The Victims’ Rights Foundation has set up a “Home Invasion Homicide Fund” to accept donations to increase the reward of $5,000 that they are offering for information that leads to an arrest and/or indictment of the individual responsible for the six home invasion robberies and homicide. All donations are tax deductible. Anyone wishing to donate to the fund should send a check with a notation in the memo line for the Home Invasion Homicide Fund to:
    The Victims’ Rights Foundation
814 West Diamond Avenue, Suite 200
    Gaithersburg, MD 20878

    Audience Questions

A number of residents spoke asking the Police about details of the crimes, street lighting, and how to better secure their homes.

County Executive Leggett and Councilmember Roger Berliner assured the audience of their continued support for the resources necessary to conduct the investigation and apprehend the suspect.

Chief Manager informed the audience that at this point, he could not discuss specifics of additional police efforts, for fear of jeopardizing the case. Chief Manager said the public should not be fearful of false alarm charges should their home alarm systems go off at night. Phone it in - overnight police can be on scene within 2-3 minutes of a call.

    Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center

Members of the public who have issues with street lighting should call the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center at 240-777-8200. The Regional Services Center – which serves Bethesda and Potomac – will coordinate all requests with Pepco and the County Transportation Department.

Please note that information from previous meetings about this investigation can be found at the Regional Services Center Website at: www.montgomerycountymd.gov/bcc.

Please don’t hesitate to contact the Regional Services Center on this or any other community concern

    Posted on: 2008-09-28

The red balloon was up at 300 feet to show the height of a 28-story building. We learned yesterday (Sept 27) that now there is talk of 500 foot buildings. so when you look at the photos and video, add an additional 200 feet onto the red balloon's height.

  • HOMICIDE ON 7-LOCKS ROAD - POLICE WARNING
    Posted on: 2008-09-09
Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division – Homicide/Sex Section detectives continue to investigate the death of Mary Frances Havenstein, age 63, of the 8900 block of Seven Locks Road in Bethesda, that was discovered the morning of Thursday, September 4, 2008.

The preliminary report from the Medical Examiner’s Office has classified the cause of her death to be multiple injuries and the manner of death as homicide.

Investigators had asked the public to call in to establish a timeline of when Ms. Havenstein was last seen alive. At this time, the last verified sighting of Ms. Havenstein was Tuesday, September 2, in Rockville, between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Detectives ask anyone who saw or spoke with Ms. Havenstein after that time or anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area of the 8900 block of Seven Locks Road within the last month to call them at 240-773-5070.

Police recovered the vehicle belonging to Havenstein at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 4. It was recovered on Forston Street at University Boulevard East in the Takoma Park area. The vehicle is believed to have been stolen in connection with this incident. It is described as a 2006 Cadillac DTS, cream in color, light interior, with Maryland tags.

It was September 4 at approximately 8:43 a.m., when 2nd District officers responded to the 8900 block of Seven Locks Road in Bethesda for the report of an assault. There they discovered Ms. Havenstein deceased inside the residence. She was bound. The preliminary investigation revealed that an unknown suspect entered the residence. It has not been confirmed if anything was taken from the home. Police were called after a family member who had not been able to reach the victim by phone on Wednesday, went to the residence Thursday morning to pick her up for an appointment.

Although it has not been confirmed that this case is linked to the previous series of home invasion robberies that occurred from September of 2007 through May of 2008, detectives continue to investigate that strong possibility. Four home invasion robberies occurred in Montgomery County and one in the District of Columbia, where the victims ranged in age from 70’s to 90’s and in each incident the victims were bound.

Montgomery County Police want to remind all community members to consistently follow good safe practices of locking doors and windows, and reporting any suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities to police as soon as possible. Police want all older women living alone, and senior couples to know that these crimes have occurred and to be particularly mindful of their safety.

We need the community to please report all suspicious activity as soon as possible. Call either our non-emergency number: 301 279-8000 or 911.

If any resident would like a free home security survey you may request this by calling our non-emergency telephone number mentioned above.

    Kind Regards,

    Denise Gill

The Luxmanor Citizens Association has scheduled the balloon test for Sept 6 from 1-5 PM. The balloon will be located at the intersection of the Rockville Pike and Marinelli. (depending on wind speeds and weather; if there is a cancellation we will let you know).

The purpose of the balloon test is to show everyone the actual height of a proposed 28-story building. This is the height of some of the buildings for the new White Flint Sector that the Planning Dep't. staff have talked about.

The balloon test is: the vendor will run up a round red balloon up to 300 feet, the height of a 28-story building. We will be able to see how tall these buildings will be, and we will be able to see from how far one will see the buildings. The balloon will be up from 1pm - 5pm.

Please come out to see the balloon and let your friends in the area know. Please take photos. PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO NEIGHBORS.

  • Old Guy Ultimate Frisbee
    Posted on: 2008-07-27
Greetings new neighbors - I have just moved into Old Farm and want to see if there is any interest in 'old guy' ultimate frisbee. In my old neighborhood we had great fun playing once a week - it was actually a multigenerational thing as some of us 'ultimate' warriors from the 70's have kids that also enjoy the game.

For those of you that do not know what I am talking about, 'ultimate' is a frisbee based game that is part soccer and part football with a touch of basketball. You divide into teams and try to advance the frisbee into an end zone (football part). The way to advance the frisbee is usually a combination of short tosses and an occassional long throw (soccer part). You don't actually run with the frisbee once you catch it ...you may gather your momentum and then you must establish a pivot foot and throw it to someone else that is running around (basketball part) It is a great run and guaranteed to tire you out.

I would be happy to coordinate it - Farmland elementary seems like a natural spot and it would be easy for me ...it's out my back door!!

    Posted on: 2008-07-03
David Pellish, of Renwood Lane, has a show ongoing until July 30 at the Dennis and Phillip Ratner Museum, 10001 Od Georgetown Rd. Museum hours are Mon-Thurs, 12pm - 4pm and Sundays, 10am - 4:30pm. Admission is free. See a sampling of David's art (in its static form) on the Neighborhood Pictures page. To get the complete effect, you must see his work to understand it...he has designed his work to give the impression of movement when you view it in person!

David's works focus on a technology that he invented; mounting his art in a light-box frame, the pieces appear to move as the viewer moves past the artwork. You have to see these pieces to understand; they are very interesting.

There will be a public reception on Sunday, July 13, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Two other artists are featured in this month-long show.

  • Let's get organized
    Posted on: 2008-06-17
It's been quite some time since Tilden Woods had a civic association meeting...so long that many people in our neighborhood don't even know that we used to have a civic association, collect dues ($15 per year), take care of our entrance, distribute a quarterly newsletter, hold community events, and sponsor occassional improvements at Farmland School. We paid (with Old Farm) for the bulletin board at Old Stage and Tilden Lane, which was built by neighbor volunteers. Tilden Woods Civic Association pressured the county to provide some traffic relief on Tildenwood Drive and Old Stage Road, which resulted in the traffic calming islands and circle that help slow the cars. We were rather active as a community when fighting the Montrose Parkway, but interest in our community has faded. Our new challenges are the maintenance of the entrance, possible rebuilding of the gazebo at the entrance, and monitoring of the traffic, now that the Montrose Parkway construction created a dedicated turn lane into Tildenwood Drive. Luxmanor Citizens Association has been quite proactive lately, working with the county to find solutions for cut-through traffic. They have a traffic committee. Shouldn't we have an organization that will participate in these discussions? Does anyone have a suggestion for how to get our civic association jump-started? Old Farm has had difficulty in organizing as well. Do you think that Old Farm, Walnut Woods, Hickory Woods, and Tilden Woods should re-organize with one meeting, election, and board? Do we have anyone in the overall communities (our FarmlandNeighbors.com community) who can serve as treasurer, or someone who knows how to set up the legal framework for our new organization? Does anyone know how to structure insurance for the new board? For those of you not familiar with a civic association, this is not a mandatory homeowner's association. Dues are voluntary (but highly suggested!) and there is no architectural control over what you can or cannot build on your property.
I have written these suggestions on my blog, www.northbethesda.blogspot.com- please make comments there and we can all see them!

  • Bethany Beach House Available For Summer Rental
    Posted on: 2008-04-09
    Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We hope that you are enjoying the beginning of Spring, and are starting to think about your summer vacation plans if you haven't already.

Just five (5) peak summer weeks remain available for rent at our home (Nemo's Retreat) in the 2-year-old Toll Brother's Resort Community, Bayside at Bethany Lakes, located only 2 miles from Bethany Beach. The house is a 4 bedroom -- 3 1/2 bath and comfortably sleeps between 10-12 people.

The community is on the Indian River Bay and offers many great amenities. It is also around the corner from the public golf course at the Salt Pond and a Putt Putt. It is incredibly convenient to nearby restaurants (including a great steakhouse) and shopping, and the community offers a free beach shuttle in the summer months. Our home is also located directly adjacent to a playground.

Our rates remain the same as last year, and we hope that you will consider spending a week at Nemo's Retreat! If you would like to see the house online (or share it with friends) please visit our web site at VRBO.com ID# 113932.

Or take a look at the terrific new Mouse on House view of every room and the exterior at Seacoast's web site: http://www.bethanyseacoast.com/Locate/SearchRentals/tabid/74/Default.aspx Our Rental ID is 5530168.

If you are interested in renting, please contact Ellie directly (contact information is below) so that she can put you in touch with our rental agent at Seacoast Realty.

    Sincerely,

    Ellie Kleinman and Mark Zaid

  • EARTH DAY IS 'EARTH MONTH' IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY
    Posted on: 2008-03-14
Looking for a way to make a difference, Isiah Leggett Report has this important news:

It's never been more important for us to step up and be good stewards of the environment. So, rather than just celebrate Earth Day, I want to take the concept one step further and designate April as Earth 'Month' in Montgomery County. Although the County's main observance of Earth Day will be held on Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27 with the next Seasons of Service countywide volunteer event, there are many other opportunities to get involved throughout the month.
If you want to make plans now to do what's right for your community and the environment, I invite you to visit the Montgomery County Volunteer Center's website at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/volunteer and check out the many projects that could use your help. Or, if you choose, organize your own group to do an Earth Day Project. The Volunteer Center has resources that can help.
This is a good way for individuals, neighborhood groups, families, businesses, schools etc. to give back to the earth that gives so much to us. So, check it out, sign up, and mark your calendars.

Notice of 'Conversations with the Council' Event on February 25th, 2008 at the home of Ellie Kleinman and Mark Zaid in Windermere. Please join us!

The Woman's Suburban Democratic Club is holding the first event in a 'Living Room Series,' Conversations with the Council.

We hope that this sort of informal and intimate setting will allow more interaction and sharing of views than is possible at our usual luncheon meetings.

Ellie Kleinman, Vice President of the Club and Chair of the Legislative Committee, has graciously offered her home for the first such meeting. So, mark your calendars for Monday, February 25, and 'Conversations with the Council.' George Levanthal and Phil Andrews are the invited guests and will talk about a few key projects
they are working on and then open it up for questions from the audience. This casual evening will give us the opportunity to hear from and talk with two leaders of the Montgomery County Council:

o George Leventhal was elected to an at-large seat on the Council in 2002 and served as the Council President last year.

o Phil Andrews was elected in 1988 to represent District 3 of Montgomery County (Rockville, Gaithersburg, North Potomac, Derwood, and Washington Grove). He is currently the Vice President of the Council.

In the event of snow, we will attempt to reschedule the event for a future date -- therefore, it is doubly important that you let us know if you plan to attend so that we can contact you in case the meeting has to be cancelled. Here are the details:

    When: Monday, February 25, 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Where: Home of Ellie Kleinman and Mark Zaid
    6436 Windermere Circle
    North Bethesda, MD 20852

    Cost: None

Refreshments: Wine and cheese, soda, cookies and coffee

RSVP: Please let Ellie know promptly if you plan to attend
and if you are bringing a spouse or guest so she can make the necessary arrangements.

Contact her at elliekleinman@alumni.tufts.edu or 301-897-0868.

Be sure to provide your phone number and email address so we can contact you in case of a weather-related change.

Also let Ellie know if you would like to bring some food or beverage for the meeting.

Directions: From Old Georgetown Road, head West on Tuckerman Lane. Turn left on the fourth street, Arroyo Drive, then take the first right onto Windermere Circle.
Take the second right again on Windermere Circle. The street has a 'No Outlet' sign. Ellie's house is the last one on the right. There is street parking on Windermere Circle.

We are looking forward to what promises to be a very interesting evening and a trial run of a new type of WSDC meeting format.

  • AFS Host Families Needed
    Posted on: 2008-01-23
AFS International Student Exchange has opportunities
for about 15 Montgomery County families to host
international high school exchange students for the
2008-2009 school year. Won't you consider it?

These are great, carefully screened kids. They come
from over 40 different countries, and are eager to
learn about America and take part in the activities of
the host family and local high school.

When you welcome a student from another country into
your home, your children and family learn about the
world, your AFS student takes home a part of America,
and you make a personal contribution to world peace
and understanding. Two and single parent households,
with or without kids, are eligible. The family
provides a place to sleep (not necessarily a private
room) and provides meals. Students bring their own
spending money and have excellent health insurance.

Now is the time to start making the arrangements.
Working with an AFS volunteer, you'll select your
student from several who are a good match for the
family's interests and lifestyle. All AFS students are
above average scholastically and speak English. To
learn more, talk to current Walter Johnson AFS
exchange students Gabi Maldonado (Paraguay), Theresa
Solms, (Germany) or Luise Schoenfeldt (Germany),

  • Cherry tree rejuvenation on Tildenwood Drive
    Posted on: 2007-12-19
At 45 years old, the cherry trees that remain on Tildenwood Drive are dead or dying. To maintain the beauty (and safety) of our community entrance, we have invited the county arborist to evaluate Tildenwood Drive for removal & replanting. Nearly all of the trees are badly diseased and have branches that pose a danger to passersby. In recent years, the flowers have been sparse. The arborist has marked a number of the old trees for removal. In their place, the county will plant 1.5 - 2 new cherry trees for each one they remove. The new trees will be Okame cherry trees; a different variety from the ones we currently have, but more robust in their structure. They will be flowering cherries, so we will have an even more beautiful expanse of flowering trees once they are planted and grow a bit. This is all part of the maturation of the neighborhood, and is a step that will secure the beauty of Tildenwood Drive well into the future. If you have any questions, you can call Emily Mintz, 301-704-2913, or William Perry, (301) 984-3125.

    Posted on: 2007-11-05
The WJ Department of Art and Design have an annual food art contest right before the winter break. It is a fun activity that allows for students to show off another side of their creativity.

One of our department' s goals is to expose students to the expanding world of design. Considering that one in 111 jobs is in art and design and that jobs in the field have increased 43% over the last ten years, we feel it is important to introduce the students to some of the possibilites in the field.

We are looking for a professional in the field of food art to come to talk and demonstrate to the students. The students have expressed an interest in pastillage and other pastry techniques. If you or some one you know would be available in early December to come in, please contact us.

    Thanks for your help!

    Hello WJ community.

My name is Mike Laukaitis and I teach in the math department here at WJ.
For years I have ran a ping-pong club during lunch. Throughout the
years and various location changes, my table has been pretty much
destroyed. We are able to use it a bit, but it's in really bad shape.
Before I go out and try to raise money (or put up my own) I wanted to
ask if anyone had a table they weren't using anymore. Any old nets and
paddles are also welcome. Thanks for any help in this matter, we had our
first club meeting today and 13 kids showed up. It's a great start!!

    Thanks again

Get those running shoes out... If you are interested (or even if you are
not interested) in running (walking) the Kensington 8K, then please go
to the website below and register. A portion of the money raised goes to
Walter Johnson HS in order to help support our modernization.

Along with a number of WJ staff, I will be running in this event. I
encourage parents and students to join the WJ 'team.' It is a great
opportunity for the WJ community to come together on a Saturday morning,
get some exercise, have fun and raise money for our school.

The Kensington 8K has been a successful run in past years and we are
fortunate to have been identified as one of the three beneficiaries of
this fundraiser. Please register and show your support for this event
    and for WJHS! Thanks.

  • Help Montgomery County Prepare for an Emergency
    Posted on: 2007-08-02
When homes around Lake Needwood had to be evacuated
due to severe storms and the fear of flooding,
Emergency Action Team members helped residents feel
safe and secure by staffing a shelter.

When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Medical
Reserve Corps members responded to the call for
medically trained volunteers to serve those in
    desperate need.

When the Charter House, an apartment building home to
seniors 55+, flooded, members of the business
community provided meals for those forced from their
homes. Other volunteers helped the senior residents
retrieve important belongings from the building.

Whenever an emergency occurs, Montgomery County
depends on volunteers to help the community. Will you
be the next volunteer who comforts a neighbor during a
    crisis?

The Montgomery County Volunteer Center maintains
several programs for volunteers of all skill levels
who want to help their community:

    · The Emergency Action Team helps staff phone banks,
comfort people in shelters, distribute information,
and many other important functions when emergencies
occur. The group meets quarterly for trainings and
updates on how the county is preparing for
emergencies. EAT members need no special skills, only
the willingness to be called when an emergency occurs.

    · The Medical Reserve Corps is made up of current and
retired medical professionals. The group has a need
    for doctors, nurses, physical therapists,
veterinarians, and many other medical specialties.

    · The Teen Adaptive Response Unit is made up of 14 –
18 year-olds who help out at shelters, phone banks,
and other locations. The group meets every other
month. Members also enjoy the opportunity to learn
about different careers that play a part in emergency
    response.

    · The Language Bank is a group of volunteers fluent in
English and another language. Volunteer translators
serve on-call to county agencies, schools, and
    non-profits.

    · Other volunteer programs that play important roles
in the county’s emergency preparedness and response
include the Fire Department’s Community Emergency
Response Training (CERT) program as well as the Red
    Cross.

The best time to prepare for an emergency is now. Join
your fellow community residents by ensuring the county
is ready when a disaster strikes.

How very exciting to see our neighborhood, Tilden Woods have their own site. It seems like yesterday, that I was editor for the Tattler (Tilden Woods Newsletter). What fun it was to be able to pass the 'info of the moment' on to the community. Here we are 35 years later all modern and ready to go! Good luck! Julie Winston
